The city of Varna is the heir of an ancient Thracian settlement which later became a popular recreational site for Roman and Byzantine aristocracy. The Varna Archaeological Museum is located in the building of the former Girls’ School and has one of the richest exhibits in the country. It hosts the Gold Treasure excavated from the Varna Necropolis in 1972. The Gold Treasure from the Varna Necropolis, dating from the late 5th millennium BC, is the oldest processed gold ever discovered anywhere in the world.
The symbol of Varna is The Dormition of the Theotokos Cathedral, which was built in 1886. It is located in the city centre. To appreciate the full beauty of the building it is best viewed after sunset. It is this time of the day when spectacular lighting drenches the facade in magnificent hues.
